UPS system

The UPS system provides short term emergency power to critical equipment when there is a mains power failure or voltage/frequency fluctuation outside acceptable limits.

There are now a number of different UPS technologies available. These include:

Online, Double Conversion, Static UPS
Delta conversion UPS
DRUPS
Rack mounted, modular, “hot swap” double conversion units
Fly wheel based UPS

Some of these systems do not require battery support but those that do have several options, including using sealed lead acid cells or Hydrogen cells

The traditional UPS system used on Mid range size data centres is a floor-standing “Online, Double Conversion Static unit” with separate Sealed Lead Acid batteries providing 5 to 10 minutes autonomy until the stand-by generators start up. Each option has its merits; however careful selection is required to match your current and future IT loads profiles, maintenance considerations, spatial limitations, “green” concerns and life cycle cost regimes.
