Generator backup
415v, diesel fuelled generators, are the standard emergency power back-up to uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems when the mains power supply fail. The engines are normally fuelled via an integral “day” tank providing 3-6 hours of run time and an external “bulk” fuel tank providing 24-48 hours of run time. On medium to large data centres, multiple engines are installed to provide N+1 or N+N resilience and are synchronized for load sharing.
There are a number of alternative technologies available, dependant on the site’s requirements. These include:
11kV generators
Gas fired generators
Rotary Diesels
Rotary Diesel Hybrids
The larger the site power demand the more viable DRUP`s type units becomes.
If there is no mains power locally or insufficient capacity, gas or oil fired engines could be also used as the primary power supply. Combined Heat and Power systems (CHP) is an energy saving alternative power/heating solution.
